SiteScope Monitoring IBM AS/400

When integrated with HP SiteScope, COMTEK NMServer for AS/400 provides the visibility necessary to effectively monitor IBM OS/400 systems.  AS/400 and OS/400 are also called i5OS, iSeries, and System i.

COMTEK NMServer /400 monitors the system hardware and software, applications, disk, communications, QSYSOPR and other queues, and provides alerts which allow corrective actions to be taken before users are impacted.

With COMTEK /400, HP SiteScope can monitor DASD (disk) utilization, CPU load, jobs in system, Job Queue, Pools,  total ASP, ASP in use, and many other critical elements.   This current information is maintained by COMTEK and is available whenever requested by SiteScope.  SiteScope may request this load information at various times of the day to track utilization.

Alerts (traps) are messages that are sent by COMTEK to SiteScope immediately if a problem occurs.  Alerts (traps) provided include CPU Overload, Disk Nearly Full, Critical Process Failed, QSYSOPR Message (filtered), and User Defined Trap.    Traps such as Disk Nearly Full have Thresholds which can be set by the user.

QSYSOPR can be shared with other applications.  QSYSOPR and other queue filtering is provided.  COMTEK /400 is usable on v4 and v5 OS/400 machines thru v5r4.  Version 6 is scheduled.  COMTEK is licensed by the physical hardware system, regardless of the number of partitions or processors.

The COMTEK /400 SiteScope Installation Guide describes the steps necessary to “connect” SiteScope to the AS/400 machine.

The HP Installation Wizard is used for new installations.   For users with SiteScope already installed, only the configuration steps are required.

The SiteScope system setup is not complex.  Briefly, the steps are:

  1. Install SiteScope on Server (for new SiteScope installation)
  2. Copy COMTEK MIB to the appropriate directory on SiteScope server.
  3. Configure SiteScope to monitor AS/400 server via ‘SNMP by MIB’ option or ‘SNMP’ option.
  4. Verify the configuration provides data as expected.
  5. Troubleshoot if necessary.

The COMTEK MIB is loaded into SiteScope.  This MIB is supplied with the COMTEK product download.  The MIB “tells” SiteScope what information the COMTEK product is able to retrieve when “polled” by SiteScope.

Also, the traps are defined in the MIB.

The installation guide describes the process of setting up a SiteScope Template for AS/400 systems.  This template is then used for all of the AS/400s being monitored.  This step is only done once.

The items to be monitored are outlined in this step.   Again, this step is performed only once in SiteScope.

In this example, SNMP by MIB is being set up.
