NMServer SNMP Agent for VOS

NMServer for VOS is an SNMP agent which provides VOS performance and resource utilization information to SNMP network management systems.  NMServer can be used for both day-to-day proactive system management and for long-term capacity planning. NMServer uses SNMP trap messages to alert you of potential system problems like when a disk is running low on space. NMServer can also act as a VOS performance data collector.

What is NMServer for VOS?

NMServer for VOS is a set of software applications that run on Stratus VOS systems.  NMServer allows the VOS system to be monitored and managed by SNMP Managers like HP OpenView.

NMServer is designed to monitor the important aspects of the VOS system such as how busy it is, how full the disks are, what processes are running, etc., and report this information to the SNMP Manager when requested. In addition, NMServer will send an alert (called a trap) to the SNMP Manager when something goes wrong or when some condition needs fixing.  These alerts include Disk Nearly Full, CPU Overloaded, Process Stopped, and many others.

What does NMServer for VOS monitor? (What is in the MIB?)

In SNMP terminology, the information gathered and maintained by an SNMP agent is represented in a Management Information Base or MIB.  The MIBs for NMServer for VOS were tailor made for VOS, not adapted from some other operating system.

System Information Module Name · VOS Version · CPU Type · Number of CPUs · Module Paging Space
Resource Information CPU · Disk · Active Processes
Status Information Module Hardware Log Messages · User Trap Data
Agent Configuration Configuration Information · User Specified Trap Thresholds · User Specified Time Intervals for Statistics Gathering

What alerts (SNMP traps) does NMServer for VOS provide?

As a proactive system management tool, NMServer provides a a variety of trap types. Traps are issued by NMServer for VOS when system conditions exceed thresholds that you have set.

System Status Traps Red Light Event

Will NMServer for VOS work with my TCP/IP stack?

NMServer for VOS is compatible with OS TCP/IP.

How would I use NMServer for VOS?

SNMP Network Management is composed of two major pieces - an Agent (such as NMServer) running in each element that you wish to monitor and a Manager (such as NetView or OpenView).  Your organization may be using an SNMP Manager to monitor its local or wide area network presently.  If so, NMServer would allow this same Manager to monitor and manage your VOS systems.  Similarly, if you are implementing a new network management system, you may wish to include your local or remote VOS systems.

What is the Remote Console feature?

NMServer for VOS includes a remote command entry feature which can be used to send VOS commands from the SNMP manager to the NMServer agent.  The agent processes the VOS command and returns any results to the manager.  This feature may be easily disabled when there are concerns about security.

What is included with NMServer for VOS?

NMServer for VOS is a complete package - it includes the NMServer for VOS SNMP Agent, MIBs, Installation Aids, OpenView Tools, Documentation and Support.
